Transcendent Insights is a Black- and woman-owned social impact advisory firm founded by Dr. Jovonne J. Bickerstaff.
A Harvard-trained sociologist by formation and a strategic facilitator by practice, Jovonne brings something most consultants don't: the habit of looking beneath what's stated to find what's actually happening — and the discipline to design from that understanding rather than around it. She works most often with senior leaders and executive teams at moments of genuine inflection, when what they've built is no longer working the way they expected, or when what they're trying to build is more complex than their current systems can hold.
Most recently, Jovonne served as Founding Director of Intentional Design for an Equitable Academy (IDEA) at the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) — a unit she designed from scratch and led as the first Program Officer to work directly in the President's office. Her work included stewardship of a $6.5M national initiative portfolio, designing leadership institutes for senior administrators, and building change programs in institutions where the resistance to change was itself institutional.
Dr. Bickerstaff is a LUMA-certified facilitator and holds a Design for Social Impact Certificate from the Stanford d.school.
That arc — entering as a practitioner, being asked to design a new organizational function from the ground up, and leaving a system that could sustain what she built — is the arc she now creates with and for her clients.
Recent work includes designing the peer learning architecture for a national network of 75+ youth-serving affiliates, facilitating structured deliberation for a civic assembly on housing, with recommendations on dignity-driven design and accessibility, and serving as strategic design advisor to a professional learning platform for mission-driven consultants.
But this work is never about one expert. It's about co-creating solutions with the people closest to the challenge.
